The MUV, which first went on sale in 1995, was the country's first-ever domestically designed 4x4 vehicle. It went on to become a successful product in both rural and urban markets and met with a resounding success in the commercial segment. While the ladder-on-frame SUV is quite old now and will go out of the market this year, there is no denying the iconic status that this rugged multi-utility vehicle enjoys. Indianautosblog would like to bring you the list of 10 Modified units of the Tata Sumo & Tata Xenon.

Firstly, let's have a look at modified Tata Xenon MUVs from across India.

5 Modified Tata Xenon pickups

While the first-gen Tata Sumo has sold in pretty good numbers, with over 100,000 copies sold within two years of its launch, the Tata Xenon has been a low-volume pick-up truck that sells more in the commercial vehicle segment than in the private car market. The low sales also mean that there are really few of these pickups that have been modified by their respective owners. That said, here are 5 modified Tata Xenon pick-up trucks that have caught our eye owing to their high street presence -

Modified Tata Xenon from Telangana

Here is a 2014 Tata Xenon that doesn't get performance updates but looks brutish owing to the various visual upgrades. It features an off-road-spec bumper with bullbar and embedded fog lamps, a revised hood with a functional hood scoop, and roof-mounted warning lamps and a massive LED light bar. Even the upper grille is new and carries a blue LED light, while there is a small LED light bar below the front registration plate. Moreover, the modified Xenon gets bolder wheel arches to accommodate the wider track, while the rear receives a large tyre carrier, a metal bumper and twin exhausts. The biggest highlight comes in the form of the suspension lift kit that makes the pickup taller and bestows it with a much bolder stance than the stock vehicle.

While the first vehicle in our list of modified Tata Xenon pickups carried several styling updates, the one above features a pretty neat look with only a handful of modifications that jazz up its exterior. Up front, you get a massive pair of fog lights that have been mounted on the blacked-out grille. In the side profile, it features bigger steel wheels shod with huge all-terrain tires. The new wheels & tires and the reworked suspension leads to a bolder stance and hence, a higher street presence.

It's only natural for concept vehicles to spawn production models but this time around here is a production-spec vehicle that tries hard to mimic a show car. The modified Tata Xenon seen above takes inspiration from the Mercedes Benz Ener-G-Force concept and features a similar front fascia and several other minor modifications that help it look like the show model. These include a reworked hood, revised fenders, new alloy wheels, and a new loading-bay cover.

The Tata Sumo Extreme concept is based on the Victa and made its debut at the 2014 Auto Expo. The official modification retains the original design language but features an enhanced styling package courtesy of several new bits. These add-ons make it look like a thoroughbred SUV rather than a bare-essential MUV. The concept model carries a dual-tone exterior paint scheme, new alloy wheels shod with wider tires, a reworked hood, and roof-mounted auxiliary lamps. Other changes include a revised upper grille, a skid plate, a reworked bumper with LED DRLs, flared wheel arches, a revised interior entertainment package with a roof-mounted display, one-touch power windows, and new seat upholstery.

In the side profile, it carries a set of black alloy wheels that are shod with wider tires. The front doors get a 'star' decal each.

The Tata Sumo Grande, which went on sale in 2008, is the second generation of the company's popular people-mover. Here is a modified example that has been done up by Big Daddy Customs, who had been given a contract to alter a set of Tata vehicles by the manufacturer itself. As per the requirements of the company, the modified Sumo Grande above carries only new soft parts, with its sheetmetal remaining untouched. The reworked vehicle features a new bumper and a revised front grille, both of which come together to give the front-end a more dynamic look. Furthermore, the Grande gets a set of new side steps, an updated rear bumper with integrated LED lamps and black-painted alloy wheels. Another highlight of the mod-job is its dual-tone paint finish with marine blue base paint and matt grey highlights.

It's unclear whether the Tata Xenon Yodha will be a new variant or an updated version of the pickup truck. The speculation is being made on the basis of spy shots of the facelifted model which surfaced in October and last month.

The exterior of Tata Xenon Yodha will likely feature restyled bumpers, revised grille, reshaped fog lamps and new design wheels. Inside the pickup, changes may include new upholstery and trim, and fitment of an infotainment system. Some other utilitarian changes also could be made to enhance the value of the vehicle.

The 2017 Tata Xenon will go on sale sometime next year in India as well as export markets like Australia, Thailand and South Africa.

The model featured is the single-cab variant, which has a slightly revised face that comprises of a body-painted single slat grille with chrome garnish, and a new bumper with redesigned fog lamp enclosures. The only change at the rear is a redesigned cluster for the pair of taillamps. Expect the same changes to be carried over to the double-cab XT model as well.

A report in August last year said that the revisions coming to the Xenon would include a new hydroformed chassis, and it is likely that the mule here is based off it.

Older spyshots have snapped the pick-up's interior, which looks largely identical to the model currently sold, save for the chrome-ringed instrument binnacles housing redesigned dials for the speedometer and tachometer. Top-end variants may feature a Harman audio system.

It could be paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, while an automatic gearbox may be exclusive to export models.

Tata Xenon facelift with automatic transmission spied in India https://indianautosblog.com/tata-xenon-facelift-automatic-transmission-spied-p245040 Mon, 17 Oct 2016 05:05:29 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=245040 Expected to launch this financial year.

The Tata Xenon facelift prototypes seen in the pictures below feature the long-rumored automatic transmission, which was announced by former Managing Director, Fusion Automotive (Australian distributor for Tata Motors) Mr. Darren Bowler in August 2015.

Tata Xenon facelift AT spied
The 2.2L diesel engine could be updated to the 156 PS/400 Nm tune as in the Safari Storme and the forthcoming Hexa. At present, the Xenon is sold only with a 5-MT, in India and global markets.

The Xenon facelift is expected to launch this financial year, if not in India at least in the Australian market where the Xenon is the sole offering of Tata Motors in the passenger vehicles segment. The exterior of the Xenon facelift gets a mild update with a new grille in body color and a new front bumper with redesigned foglight enclosures.

There are no other changes to the exterior, or the interior for that matter. However, the Xenon facelift prototypes seen here are likely the export variant, given the presence of the Ford Ranger as a benchmarking vehicle.

According to Mr. Bowler's interview to an Australian publication in August 2015, the Tata Xenon facelift will be based on a new hydroformed chassis, and will sport an automatic transmission to appeal to urban buyers. The engine will continue to be the 2.2-liter four-cylinder VariCOR unit, though the power and torque outputs could be updated from the present 147 PS and 320 Nm to 156 PS and 400 Nm.

The facelifted Xenon could get minor cosmetic upgrades and engine tweaks.

Given that the Delhi NCR has a ban on diesel-powered cars with engines displacing over 2000 cc, Tata could introduce a sub 2.0L diesel engine for products that offer the 2.2L VARICOR turbodiesel unit, which includes the Tata Xenon. As for the 3.0 common rail turbodiesel engine, it could get slight engine tweaks for better refinement and fuel efficiency.

Details on the cosmetic tweaks are also scarce. It could feature a new front bumper design, revised grille and headlamps and new wheel cap designs and could include an Harman infotainment system.

Tata Xenon to get new hydroformed chassis, AT in 2016 - Australia https://indianautosblog.com/tata-xenon-at-esc-australia-p185671 Sat, 01 Aug 2015 09:52:51 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=185671 Chassis expected to get lighter, stronger and more rigid.

The Tata Xenon’s automatic version, that was originally slated to launch in Australia this year, has been delayed and is now expected to arrive around mid-2016. Along with the automatic transmission, it is set to also feature a new hydroformed ladder frame chassis.

Tata Xenon Australia side
The Xenon, imported from India, is available in Australia in 6 variants, powered by a 2.2-liter diesel engine.

Darren Bowler, Managing Director, Fusion Automotive, Tata’s local independent distributor in Australia speaking with Motoring.com.au, said that significant amount of testing still remains to be performed before the Xenon could be launched in Australia.

The 2016 model will be unique, offering a new hydroformed chassis, automatic transmission, Electronic Stability Control "and a couple of other things that will be in that vehicle at that time" to make it an attractive option for urban pick up buyers.

The evaluation units of the Xenon AT have been running hot and cold testing for the ESC (Electronic Stability Control), while the cold testing has been concluded the engineering team at Tata is set to commence hot testing, Mr Bowler added.

The automatic transmission variant will target Australian customers in the metropolitan areas.

According to official VFACTS data the current Xenon has sold 600 units since the launch in October 2013, with most of the buyers from rural and provincial areas. Fusion Automotive currently operates 38 dealerships and aims to take the number higher to 45 by the end of 2015.

The new Xenon will compete with the D40 Nissan Navara and the MN Mitsubishi Triton which recently have dropped prices and ventured into the market below $ 30,000 AUD (INR 14 lakhs) in which the Xenon operates. It will also have to contend with players from brands like Foton and Great Wall along with Mahindra who are all looking to increase their market share.

Thailand - Tata Motors to launch two new products and improve after-sales support https://indianautosblog.com/2014-tata-xenon-thailand-p153784 Thu, 23 Oct 2014 06:11:02 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=153784 Tata aims to improve its brand image in Thailand.

Tata will launch two new products in Thailand by the end of the year, reports NationMultimedia.com. The publication spoke to Tata Motors Thailand's CEO, Sanjay Mishra, at a conference recently, and got to learn his plans for the Thai market.

Tata Xenon Australia front
The refreshed Tata Xenon will appeal to the private buyer, says Tata. Seen here is the Xenon from Australia, image used for illustration only.

According to the report, a refreshed Xenon pickup will be launched which will cater mainly to the private owner. The Xenon, assembled and sold in Thailand at the moment, largely attracts the commercial buyer, and is driven primarily by drivers and not owners. Tata hopes that the refreshed Xenon will alter the public's perception of Tata being a commercial vehicle maker, Mishra said.

The second product would be the Prima range, which will have its Thai debut at the Bus and Truck Show in November. The Prima will strengthen Tata's product portfolio in Thailand which currently extends to the Xenon range and Super Ace. The new Xenon and Prima are likely to have their market launches in the third quarter of this financial year.
